1: Why is Bayer CropScience providing recommendations on personal protective equipment (PPE) for its product users on this website?
According to common practice only vague information on the use of PPE is given on the product-label. Bayer CropScience wants to guide the users in more details on the suitable PPE to use and when to use it. Instead of general recommendation you will find a crop and activity adopted scheme, clearly indicating the different elements of PPE to be used.
2: Which type of recommendation is given in this website?
Recommendations on the type of personal protective equipment (PPE) to use as a minimum for the safe use of Bayer CropScience products during different operations, like mixing/loading, application or cleaning performed by the user. The recommendations are based on the R-phrases set at the country level, the type of formulation, the area of use (field/indoor, low/high crop), the kind of application method (e.g. spraying, spreading, seed treatment) and the type of application equipment (tractor, handheld applicator, drip irrigation).
These recommendations also take into account the national legal requirements on PPE and the recommendations elaborated in the operator risk assessments.
Furthermore, detailed information is given on the type and the quality of the PPE recommended for ensuring a good protection of the users.
3: Which type of information is not provided in this website?
There is only general information provided for the description of the standard personal protective equipment (PPE) recommended for use. Not given is a list of suppliers nor any information on trade name of the equipments available on the market. Please contact your usual supplier for detailed information and reference on the equipment that is proposed in their catalogues for the protection of users.
4: Why must I protect myself when using plant protection products?
During the handling and application of Plant Protection Products, the users may come into direct contact with products and, depending on the type of use and the type of operation conducted, like mixing/loading, application or cleaning, some body parts (foot, legs, arms, face) may be exposed to products via the skin, nose, mouth or eyes.
It is essential that users systematically take preventive measures to safeguard their health and to reduce to acceptable levels any risks associated with the general use of Plant Protection Products. In terms of protection for the body, preventive use of protective clothing and/or protective equipment must be considered as the first line of protection to minimise exposure – for example, coveralls, gloves, boots, masks, goggles or face-shields. Another measure is to ensure that all protective clothing and safety equipment is clean, in good repair and well maintained.

5: What happens, if I do not protect myself adequately?
The Good Practices defined for the safe use of Plant Protection Products and for ensuring an acceptable risk for the users, always recommend using preventively suitable protective clothing and/or protective equipment during the handling and application of Plant Protection Products.
6: Where can I buy the recommended equipment?
Please contact your usual supplier for detailed information and reference on the personal protective equipment that is proposed in their catalogues for the protection of users.
7: Can this tool be used to get recommendations for all products?
This tool was developed by Bayer CropScience to provide the users with clear recommendations and detailed information on the suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) to use for the safe use of Bayer CropScience products. These recommendations are specific to each product and are given only for Bayer CropScience products.
8: How can I use this tool for tank-mixtures?
For tank-mixtures of Plant Protection Products, Bayer CropScience recommends to the users to wear the highest standard of the personal protective clothing and equipment recommended for the products added in the mixture, either in this website tool for Bayer CropScience products or on the labels for products supplied by another manufacturer.
9: How can I protect myself during re-entering the treated plot?
After application of Plant Protection Products, the users or workers may have to re-enter the treated area and come into direct contact with product applied on the plants. Good practices for the safe use of PPPs recommend also in this case that users and workers systematically take preventive measures to protect themselves by using suitable protective clothing and/or protective equipment.
Bayer CropScience has developed this tool to provide the users also with clear recommendations on the suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) to use for re-entering a treated area after treatments.
10: How long is a printout that I made from the recommended PPE in the tool, valid?
The R-phrases from the registrations - on which this website tool is based, see answer to question 2 - can be regularly updated according to the latest regulatory information or to changed (European) legislation.
Therefor it is necessary to check the validity of the printed recommendation(s) on a regular basis.
